Halal Turkey Cooking Tips
There are many steps required for baking a tender, moist and flavorful turkey. Pak Halal turkeys are chosen to be the most tender variety. They are slaughtered and prepared with strict Halal guidelines. Certification documentation is always available. But once you’ve brought your turkey home, the thawing, brining and baking process can be complicated. Here are a few tips for cooking a tasty Halal turkey this holiday season.
Select the right size: As a rule of thumb, choose a turkey that provides 1 - 1 ½ pounds per person. Add 2-3 pounds for bones, and you should have plenty of turkey for all. Some households cook an additional smaller bird to ensure plenty of leftover potential.
Leave time for thawing: Calculating thawing times is essential. A half-frozen turkey on Thanksgiving morning is sure to ruin the meal. For every 5 pounds of turkey, plan to thaw for 24 hours in the refrigerator. Leave the original packaging on the bird and place it on a rimmed baking sheet for the proper amount of time. Do not thaw a turkey at room temperature; this can cause bacterial growth.
Brine for a moist Halal turkey: Submerging your turkey in a brine mixture of water, salt, sugar, and spices can up the moisture level and guard against a dry turkey. Be sure to plan for brining and thawing times. We love this “My Favorite Turkey Brine” recipe from Ree Drummond and the Food Network if you don’t have a family recipe.
Time to get baking: Plan for about 15 minutes per pound baking time for your Halal Turkey. Before placing it in a pre-warmed oven, tuck the wings under the body and truss together the legs with kitchen twine to ensure even cooking. Avoid the urge to stuff with dressing; this can increase cooking times, causing a dryer turkey. Rubbing the turkey skin with oil or butter can up the browning and crispiness of the skin, adding more flavor. And most importantly, resist the urge to peek or baste your turkey continuously. Let your oven do its job and bake at an even temperature throughout the entire cooking process.
